SHIP National Technical Assistance Center

Free

The national center that supports state SHIP programs. It can point you to your state's SHIP but does not counsel individuals itself.

When to use it: Use if you cannot find your state SHIP online and need help getting connected.

This number is not a counseling line; your local SHIP gives the actual one-on-one help.

Medicare Plan Finder

Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS)

Free

Medicare's official tool to compare Medicare Advantage and Part D drug plans in your parent's area by cost, covered drugs and pharmacies.

When to use it: Use during open enrollment or after a move into a facility, which can open a chance to change drug plans.

Moving into or out of a nursing home can let your parent switch drug plans; check before the move.

24/7, except some federal holidays

Medigap Policy Finder

Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS)

Free

Medicare's tool to see which Medicare Supplement (Medigap) policies are sold in your parent's area and what they cover.

When to use it: Use when reviewing whether your parent's supplement insurance is worth keeping or changing.

Outside certain protected periods, Medigap insurers in most states can use medical underwriting; talk to your SHIP before dropping a policy.

24/7, except some federal holidays

Senior Medicare Patrol (SMP)

SMP National Resource Center (funded by ACL)

Free

Free local SMP programs help people spot, report and prevent Medicare fraud, errors and abuse, such as bills for services your parent never got. The locator lists programs in every state, D.C. and territories.

When to use it: Use when a Medicare statement shows charges that look wrong or someone is pushing unneeded equipment or tests.

Medicare Rights Center National Helpline

Medicare Rights Center

Free

A national nonprofit helpline that answers questions about Medicare choices, rights and protections, payment denials and appeals, complaints about care, and Medicare bills. Services are available in Spanish.

When to use it: Call when you are stuck on a Medicare denial, appeal or bill and want free expert help.

Mon-Fri

Medicare Beneficiary Ombudsman

Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS)
