How to pay for senior care
Medicare
Medicare does not pay for the room-and-board cost of assisted living, memory care, or long-term custodial care. It does cover short-term skilled nursing (up to 100 days after a qualifying hospital stay), eligible home health care, and hospice.
Medicaid
Medicaid is the largest payer for long-term care. Most states offer Home & Community-Based Services (HCBS) waivers that help cover assisted living or in-home care for those who qualify financially, and Medicaid covers long-term nursing home care.
VA Benefits
Wartime veterans and surviving spouses may qualify for VA Aid & Attendance— a monthly pension (over $2,300/mo for a couple in 2024) that helps pay for assisted living, memory care, or in-home care. It's one of the most underused benefits available.
Other options: long-term care insurance, life insurance conversions, bridge loans, reverse mortgages, and selling or renting a home are all common ways families fund care. A senior living advisor can help you compare them — for free.
