Getting around resources (3)

Eldercare Locator: Finding a Ride

U.S. Administration for Community Living, run by USAging

Free

When a parent can no longer drive, the Eldercare Locator connects you with your local Area Agency on Aging and community organizations that know the senior ride options in your parent's area.

When to use it: When a parent has stopped driving, or should, and needs rides to appointments, shopping or activities.

Transportation and Caregiving: Tools, Tips and Resources

National Aging and Disability Transportation Center (Easterseals and USAging)

Free

A guide for family caregivers, including those caring for someone with dementia, on finding and using community transportation instead of giving every ride yourself.

When to use it: When driving your parent everywhere is wearing you down and you want other options.

NADTC's federal funding ended September 30, 2025 and the center is no longer operating; its guides remain online but may not be updated.

Medicaid Rides to Medical Appointments (NEMT)

Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, through state Medicaid programs

Free

Transportation to medical care is a required Medicaid benefit, so a parent on Medicaid can usually get free rides to covered medical appointments. Rides are arranged through the state Medicaid program or the parent's Medicaid health plan.

When to use it: When a parent on Medicaid is missing appointments because they have no ride.

Rides often must be booked ahead through the state or plan's ride line, so call the member services number on the Medicaid card early.
